The Ars Moriendi, or "art of dying," is a body of Christian literature that provided practical guidance for the dying and those attending them. These manuals informed the dying about what to expect, and prescribed prayers, actions, and attitudes that would lead to a "good death" and salvation.

In 1490, Ars Moriendi caught the attention of William Caxton. Responsible for introducing the revolutionary printing press to England, Caxton was Britain’s first retailer of printed books and the first person to ever print a book in English. Caxton put his other work on hold in order to translate a French version of Ars Moriendi into English. The Ars Moriendi or “Art of Dying” was a 15th century book which was essentially a manual for death and dying. While the concept of a manual for death and dying might seem odd to some modern people, the Ars Moriendi was in fact very important and greatly appreciated by medieval Christians.

The term ars moriendi (the art of dying) has three interrelated meanings: (1) any extended theological or spiritual discussion designed to prepare Christians to die; (2) a genre of works originating in the fifteenth century whose titles generally (but not always) include words like "art" or "method" suggesting their special identity as a guide to the management of the Ars moriendi (latin for «kunsten å døy») var tittelen på eit vidgjete kristent, illustrert mellomalderverk frå 1400-talet som vart mykje lese i samtida.
